Understanding the NH34 GMT Movement

What is the NH34 Automatic GMT Movement?

The NH34 is a Seiko-developed automatic GMT movement widely used in custom watches, Seiko mods, and by independent watchmakers. It features automatic and manual winding capabilities, a power reserve of approximately 41 hours, 24 jewels, and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, ensuring smooth and reliable timekeeping. Its defining feature is the dedicated GMT hand, which allows the wearer to track a second time zone—making it ideal for travel and dual-time functionality.

How the NH34 Works

Like other Seiko automatic movements, the NH34 is powered by the motion of the wearer’s wrist. As the watch is worn, an internal rotor winds the mainspring, storing energy to keep the movement running. It also supports manual winding for added convenience. The independently adjustable GMT hand allows users to set a second time zone, making it particularly well-suited for travelers and GMT-style custom builds.

Setting and Operating the NH34

Manual Winding: Unscrew the crown and rotate it clockwise approximately 30–40 turns to fully wind the movement and restore its power reserve.

Date Setting: Pull the crown to the first position and turn it clockwise to adjust the date. It is recommended to avoid changing the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as the mechanism may already be engaged in its date change cycle.

GMT Hand Adjustment: In most NH34 configurations, the GMT hand is adjusted in the first crown position by turning the crown counterclockwise, allowing independent setting of a second time zone.

Time Setting: Pull the crown to the second position to set the main time. In this position, the GMT hand moves in sync with the hour hand for accurate alignment. Once set, push the crown back in and screw it down securely to maintain water resistance.

Hacking Function: When the crown is pulled to the time-setting position, the seconds hand stops, allowing precise time synchronization.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure long-term performance, regular wearing or the use of an automatic watch winder is recommended. Although the NH34 is designed for durability, strong shocks should be avoided to maintain accuracy. Routine servicing every 3 to 5 years is advised, and water-resistant models should have their seals checked periodically to preserve protection.

Why Choose the NH34 GMT Movement?

The NH34 is highly regarded for offering a reliable and affordable GMT complication within the Seiko movement family. Its durability, ease of use, and versatility make it an excellent choice for travellers, collectors, and custom watch enthusiasts seeking a functional and stylish dual-time watch.
